Serving the community for almost 100 years
J R Hammersley & Son has been serving Brookmans Park and the surrounding district since 1926. The current owners, Iain and Lorraine, have been running the business since 1998. Prior to that Iain was the shop manager for 10 years following time spent working at Billingsgate fish market in London.
Everyday Iain makes the 50-mile round trip to Billingsgate fish market to stock up on the best fresh fish he can find. He says he likes to see the fish for himself so that he can select the best quality produce at the best prices to pass on to his customers.
Together, they supply private customers, caterers, event organisers, pubs and local nursing homes in Brookmans Park, Hatfield, Barnet, Potters Bar and the surrounding area from their shop premises in Brookmans Park.
Iain and Lorraine have been awarded a FIVE star food hygiene rating from Scores on the Doors and the business was voted one of the top five independent shops in Welwyn Hatfield in 2013 after a poll of customers’ favourites.
Iain and Lorraine are happy to try to source fish to order. The following are some of the fish regularly available: cod, crab, haddock, lobsters, mackerel, mussels, oysters, plaice, prawns, salmon, scallops, sea bass, shellfish, smoked fish, smoked salmon, smoked trout, swordfish, tuna, and other fish to order.

I ordered sushi grade salmon and tuna for the first time. I have to say it was the most amazing fish I have ever eaten. It melted in your mouth. I also ordered tobiko- fish eggs which finished off the sushi perfectly. Excellent service, excellent fish- I wouldn’t buy fish anywhere else. Also their sea bass fillets are exceptional..

I recently had the pleasure of visiting this exceptional fishmonger, and the experience was nothing short of fantastic. The variety and freshness of their seafood were truly impressive.
However, what stood out the most was their oysters. They were absolutely exquisite and incredibly fresh. The staff was knowledgeable and provided great recommendations.
I highly recommend this fishmonger, especially if you're a seafood enthusiast. The outstanding oysters and the overall service and quality of the seafood make it a top-notch establishment

Could not recommend more highly! The fish we purchased was incredible, so fresh and tasty. The owners are also lovely, so chatty and helpful and we had a really nice time speaking with them and an even nicer time eating the fish we'd bought. Will definitely be becoming a regular.

Great fishmongers with lovely, friendly staff. Popped down from Barnet a week or so ago for a side of salmon. Took 10 minutes and a fab quality side of fish. Will definitely be back.

I moved to potters bar 5yrs ago & tried to stay loyal to me previous fishmonger but distance and Ulez made this impossible! I have stumbled across an absolute gem! Lorraine is welcoming and accommodating. A very warm welcome and fantastic quality fish for last nights bbq! Thank you

I wanted to cook a special meal for Valentine’s. I bought fresh squid, prawns, mussels and scallops to make a seafood pasta dish. It was the best seafood we have ever eaten. Lorraine was so helpful too, suggesting how to cook the various parts. Amazing seafood and amazing service.

Thought I’d try James Martin’s seafood lasagne so went to Hammersley for the mussels, clams and brill (didn’t even know what brill is 🙄). Hammersley had all the seafood I needed and filleted and skinned the brill for me. The result was brilliant but you could taste the quality of the seafood. Thanks ever so much Hammersley for your excellent service with a smile and tips.

Sending a massive thank you to Iain and Lorraine at JR Hammersley for being there throughout covid and always with their amazing fish choices. Always fresh fish, always friendly and helpful. We've enjoyed halibut, turbot, cod, hake, lemon sole, prawns - fresh and frozen, whole lobster, scallops, sea bass, squid, brill and more. Couldn’t recommend this shop anymore! Extremely friendly, considerate and polite couple.
I was made to feel very welcome and it was very comforting and reassuring that due to my health issues,,the staff were happily wearing masks to keep everyone safe along with only three customers in the shop at a time as it is village style shop.
